My Story
Why i found therapy and why i offer it now
19 years ago, my dad passed away from a sudden, aggressive cancer. I didn’t cope well—turned to alcohol and snapped at the people I love most. My wife, who’s always been my biggest support, suggested counselling. I gave it a go, but it felt cold and transactional, like paying for a service rather than being genuinely heard. I left thinking, maybe therapy just isn’t for me.
7 years ago, when my mum passed away after her own battle with cancer, I knew I needed help again. This time, I found a therapist who really made me feel safe. They didn’t rush me or judge me—they just let me be me. I explored feelings I hadn’t even realised I was holding onto, and I came out of it with a much better understanding of myself and my relationship with my parents.
That same year, we were on a family holiday in the Lake District when I woke up feeling completely flat—like I’d lost my sense of purpose. My wife asked me what I wanted to do, and I said, I want to help people the way I was supported.
That moment changed everything. I went back to college, balancing life as a police officer, husband, and dad while training to become a therapist.
